Spiritual Exercises for Teachers & Catechists

Each of the ten sessions begins with the “Spiritual Exercises.” These profound experiences
combine prayer, meditation, reflection, and a beautiful, moving song. (A CD with the music for
all ten songs accompanies each book.)

The purpose of these Spiritual Exercises is threefold:

  • To nourish your soul and feed the hunger within each of us to know God more fully.

  • To help you as a teacher or catechist know how to lead your learners to deeper
    spirituality.

  • And to help you become a “friend of Jesus” so you can share that friendship with your
    learners.

Step 1. Spiritual Exercises
The Spiritual Exercises for Into the Fields draw upon the wisdom of St. Ignatius of
Loyola. The text was written and the songs composed by
Dan Schutte, with Diana
Dudoit Raiche
as the general editor. These Spiritual Exercises are intended to help you
grow in your faith and deepen your relationship with God.

Each exercise is accompanied by
a piece of music meant to draw you into the heart of
the prayer. The reflections engage your mind and will, stretch your understanding, and
draw you nearer to the heart of the Lord. A series of “suggestions for use” help you
derive the maximum benefit. Each exercise ends with a
“colloquy,” a prayer
conversation with God who loves us intimately. The goal here is to be with the God who
loves you far more than you know.

Spend about thirty minutes with the exercise, then ten minutes making notes about
your experience. Later, within the large group teaching session, you will be invited to
share with others about your personal experiences.
